God’s Tabernacle Pattern

Exodus 24 and 25 tell of Moses going up to Mount Sinai and receiving explicit instructions from God as to how the children of Israel should construct  a sanctuary for God:

Moses went up into the mount, and a cloud covered the mount. And the glory of ADONAI abode upon mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day He called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud. And the sight of the glory of ADONAI was like devouring fire on the top of the mount in the eyes of the children of Israel. And Moses went into the midst of the cloud, and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights.

Spoken of in Exodus 40:

After Moses reared up the tabernacle, the pillars, and the tent over the tabernacle along with its covering, he arranged the interior with the ark, and the vail to cover the ark of the testimony, the table, the bread and candlestick, the lamps, the golden altar and incense, the door of the tent, the laver with water, and the court around the tent. He offered the burnt offering and the meat offering as ADONAI commanded him. So Moses finished the work.

“Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation and the glory of ADONAI filled the tabernacle, and Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of ADONAI filled the tabernacle. And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys: but if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up.

“For the cloud of ADONAI was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys!” (verses 34-38)

The vision of his magnificent presence in their midst! This is what God gave to the Israelites to remember when they celebrate…

The Festival of Sukkot

You are to observe it as a feast to ADONAI seven days in the year; it is a permanent regulation, generation after generation; keep it in the seventh month. You are to live in booths (sukkot) for seven days; all who live in Israel will dwell in booths, so that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am ADONAI your God (Exodus 23:41-44).

A Foretelling!

In God’s command to celebrate the Festival of Booths, there is also a foretelling of the time when God’s presence will once again inhabit the earth! His presence will be our light forever, and His righteousness and glory and goodness will fill the earth!

“And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.'”
